The boat house is located at the close to the national park and is surrounded by an abundant nature  in the middle of the hills, but nevertheless only 300 meters away to the Kep beach and 5 minutes to the famous crab market.

The boat house have only four rooms. The rooms are designed with traditional khmer style and the rooms on the first floor are on the same height as the surrounding trees which provide you shade and freshness. All rooms are equipped with ventilators and mosquito net and some rooms have private bathroom with hot water, and some of the rooms have shared bathroom.

The boat house offer many different services to you to facilitate your days, such as hiring of motor bikes, bicycles, bus tickets to various destinations, boattickets to Rabbit island, taxi to Phnom Penh. They also organize guided tours of the area by a linguist and anthropologist specialist.

There are many things to do in Prek Thnout. Aside from its picturesque views, it is home to a number of rare and endangered species. There are tourist guides (US$3/10 people) who can lead visitors on a guided walk in the mangrove forests or to the waterfalls which is also great of swimming. Nighttime boat trips (US$30/boat/15 people) in the mangroves are possible too, all the better to see the hundreds of fireflies in the area.

Visitors may have the opportunity to witness traditional Cambodian ceremonies and appreciate the local cuisine (US$3/person/meal) offered by the villagers. One can also see how they traditionally prepare food.

The villagers’ livelihood is weaving and handicraft production (made of rattan which is plentiful in the area), the process of which can be observed by tourists. All proceeds from their handicraft products—as well as the entrance fee of US$3—go back to benefit the community.

Prek Thnout is around 30km from the town of Kampot and around 90km from Sihanoukville. It is accessible via private car, bus, minibus, or taxi.

Known as a healing center of Buddhist faith, the ruins of the shrine can be found inside a limestone cave. All around it are stalagmites and stalactites growing into and around it. The shrine is a 4th-5th century AD structure said to be associated with the kingdom of Funan, an ancient pre-Angkor state around the Mekong Delta. Some carvings can still be seen, although most are already in ruins.

Like the other caves around Kampot, there is no entrance fee to see the Phnom K’Chnor. Avoid going to the place during the rainy season.

The beach is undeveloped though, so there are no lounge chairs to offer visitors. There are, however, drink stalls selling coconut juice, as well as establishments selling fresh seafood like crabs, cuttlefish, snails, and even lobster.

The view in the Prek Ampil beach is very picturesque. While the beach itself is not ideal for swimming, it is good for snorkeling and scuba diving, as the waters are rich in corals.

Most tourists who come to Prek Ampil, though, choose to chat with the local seaweed farmers who have taken over the area, or watch them harvest the water plants. These seaweed products are then sent off to Malaysia.

Aside from the farmers’ community, there are ruins of villas built in the 1960s along the beach. These had been the remnants of a time pre-Civil War when the small town used to be a weekend destination.

Prek Ampil is in the Koh Toch commune, around 18 kilometers from the town of Kampot.

The Kep Thmey Wildlife Reserve

Kep Thmey, located in Beoungtouk Commune 8km from Kampot, is a popular wildlife park among locals and foreign tourists alike. Aside from a number of wild animals like tigers and gibbons, Kep Thmey also provides a home to a variety of birds like partridges and orange-headed thrush.

There are also a variety of plant and tree species in Kep Thmey, that would provide hours of pleasure for nature lovers to see and identify.

The Phnom Chhnok, Phnom Seda Orn, and Phnom Daung Wildlife Parks

The other three nature reserves, although nearer, are less popular than Kep Thmey but worth a visit nonetheless for their particular charms. The main attraction in Phnom Chhnok, for example, is its wonderful views of the sunset. From the hilltop, one can see a vista of rice fields, pal sugar trees, and Cambodia’s scenic countryside. Located in the Bos Trobek Village in Trorpeang Pring Commune, Phnom Chhnok is 9km from the town of Kampot.

Phnom Seda Orn is another popular nature and wildlife reserve near Kampot. Among other things, it is best known for its flora and fauna. Just 6 km from town, Phnom Seda Orn is located in Ang Kor Village in the Trorpeang Pring Commune of Kampot District.

The Phnom Daung Wildlife Reserve is another nature park near Kampot. It is only around 7km from town, located in Beoung Tapream Village of the Treuy Koh Commune.
